 Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about making the switch from full-time to contractor or consultant? Here’s what you can expect as an hourly, W-2 consultant with Devon.

What is a Consultant?

A consultant, or contract employee, is a highly qualified individual who works for Devon on temporary job assignments. The duration of a contract assignment ranges from one to 12 months, but many last one year or longer. Once the assignment is complete, you would move on to another contract opportunity.

Devon’s contract employees make various forms of employment arrangement including hourly W-2 employment, salaried W-2 employment and independent sub-contracting.

Is Travel Involved?

Although many contract employees are mobile and travel from city to city for various job assignments, Devon Consulting is a regional company offering assignments in the PA and NJ areas, which do not usually require travel. The added advantage of staying local is that our consultants build reputations with local companies, increasing the likelihood of being called back more than once by a client company or being placed by Devon on several consecutive assignments.

Why are Contractors paid more than Traditional Employees?

Contractors are paid more because their jobs are temporary and they assume the risk of downtime. Hourly contractors are willing to take on this risk when they possess skills that are in demand, primarily because they are continually able to obtain assignments. Typically, staffing companies leave the contractor to his or her own devices to find new assignments. At Devon Consulting, we proactively market our consultants for an extension to the existing contract, or identify another contract opportunity six weeks prior to the end of the consultant's current assignment.

Typically, hourly contractors cover the costs of paid time off, insurance plans, retirement plans, and training. Contractors who have skills that are in demand are willing to assume these expenses into their pay rate, because they often are still able to make more money than they would in a traditional, full time, salaried position.

Because hourly contractors are W-2 employees of Devon Consulting, they can benefit from quarterly enrollment and participation in our 401(k) plan. Devon also matches your social security and pays 100% of the costs of professional liability insurance.

How Can I Ensure Repeat Assignments?

The best way to for a contractor to ensure job security is by continuously developing his or her skills. Contractors who continue to learn new, emerging skills and technologies are much more likely to be placed on a contract. The more the skill or technology is in demand, the greater the pay rate the market will bear.
